Do you love a beautifully set table? I do and would love to have sets of dishes for every occasion and accessories to go with them. Hardly practicable or affordable. So do the next best thing. Invest in neutral dishes. Then buy accent pieces and make chargers to dress up your fall table.
When I see the plastic chargers at Dollar Tree I always buy them. I don’t always see them. Maybe they are a seasonal thing. The main thing is I have the chargers when I get an idea. And you know how it is when inspiration strikes. And strike it did.
I got the bright idea of decoupaging fabric leaves on a cream charger to coordinate with my fall plates. Since I already had the spray chalk paint and the chargers. I even picked up the leaves because I knew I could use them. And I did on my Hardware Fall Sign. And now this project. Little did I know… Other charger projects are ones for Christmas, Galvanized Look and Farmhouse Style.
The chargers were sprayed with the cream spray chalk paint. I used the same paint in white when I made the Christmas plate chargers last year. Lay the leaves out in a pattern you like. I mixed up the colors a bit because I only had a certain amount of the green and yellow leaves. Actually, I like that they aren’t matchy.
I started to decoupage the leaves on the charger. I could not get them to stay. No matter what I did. That is when I get determined I am going to make it work.
This is what I did. First off I resprayed the charger and put it aside for a minute. I remembered Karen gave me spray glue. Now a word of warning. I am a messy crafter and don’t wear gloves. I held the leaf out about arm’s length and sprayed the back and put it in place. Repeat the process for each leaf. And the reason I did it that way is that I didn’t want to spray the whole charger with glue.
Let the glue dry thoroughly. I had other things to do and didn’t get back to it until a day later. The leaves were on and didn’t fall off. Some of the leaves had popped up in places but I am ok with that. It gives the charger a more textural look. Use a varnish. I used a matte finish because I didn’t want a shiny look.
Will you make chargers to dress up your fall table? It is a good way to add a casual elegance to the table. And make it fun. I haven’t seen chargers like these have you?
