I Took The Plunge and Bought Chalk Paint

I took the plunge and bought Chalk Paint.  Can you believe it!  I was on my way to meet friends for dinner and passed the store that carries Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

I Took The Plunge and Bought Chalk Paint I had time to waste and told myself why not stop in and buy a sample.  I decided on French Linen.

I Took The Plunge and Bought Chalk Paint

I spied this stool in a corner on one of my pickin days.  It was a one of those places that you think you may disappear among the furniture and never be seen again.  I couldn’t even tell you where the place is.

Sue always drives and you know me, I get lost.  Although that can be a good thing.  I think of the place as a warehouse and it goes on and on.  The stool was going to be the project to try the Annie Sloan chalk paint.

The owner or someone who had the stool, fixed it as the pieces of dowel connecting the legs were new and the top was patched with spackle.   There was another spot that was repaired but it wasn’t done very well so I sanded it down and patched it up with my favorite go to wood filler.   I really liked the details on this piece and felt the paint would enhance it.

So I started in and felt apprehension, was I really using store bought chalk paint?  Do I like it?  Will I buy it again?  I have been told the quart goes a long way.  The sample pot did not, I used it all up on the stool.  The first coat gave good coverage.  As you can see the stool is shiny black.  I did wipe it down with the deglosser and sanded out some of the little drip marks.  Other than that I began painting.

The first coat covered well but I knew I had to do another coat of paint.  The paint goes on smooth and did not drip like the DIY chalk paint does sometimes.  Once the piece was painted, I lightly sanded it in places.  It really didn’t need much as I did not want to do a heavy distressing.

I Took The Plunge and Bought Chalk Paint

I waxed the stool with the clear wax.  I didn’t buy Annie Sloan wax, maybe I will the next time I buy a quart of Annie Sloan paint.  Did I say that?  Yes I did.  I also applied a coat of the dark wax.

I Took The Plunge and Bought Chalk Paint

Now I sell many of the pieces I paint so I am always aware of the cost since people are cost conscious.  I will continue to paint using my DIY chalk paint recipe.  I am glad I took the plunge and plan on buying different brands in the future.  It was a fun experiment and broaden my horizons.

Love your little stool. I could not have passed it up, even in it’s original finish. It’s just adorable. I’ve found with Annie Sloan CP that I often have to add a little water. Hope you will be able to try One-Step by Amy Howard. It is my favorite of all the chalk-type paints. One Step really sticks to anything and gives a smooth finish.

It is funny you reccomend Amy Howard, I have been to the store two times this week to buy it. The first time they didn’t have the color I thought I wanted. Then yesterday I wasn’t sure I wanted the color I thought I wanted. I think I will decide on the piece of furniture and then buy it. I really want to try the aging dust. Thanks so much.

That is the prettiest stool. What great bones! And the Annie Sloan gray is just top of the line. It is a beautiful piece. #ihaveastoolfeddish Thanks so much for linking to Friday’s Furniture Fix.

Thank you so much. I was so tempted to keep the stool to use as a plant stand but it is at the booth. I really liked using Annie Sloan paint and will buy it along with other brands. It is fun to try new things.

Hi there! I found this post over at The Scoop. I was fascinated because I thought maybe you were new to painting, but I see you are not. I am currently taking on my very first painting project, a child’s table and chairs. No chalk paint for me this time, but I will try my hand at that too! I would love it if you would stop by Celebrate and Decorate and share your post at Celebrate Your Story Link party! The party begins at 8 PM EST on Monday night. Glad I stumbled upon Shopopen5! I am a Florida resident, too!

Oh Thank You So Much. I will certainly pay you a visit. I can’t wait to see what you do with the child’s table and chairs. I found one in my neighborhood but it only has one chair. I have been mulling over ideas.

Am I to believe that you approve of the great Sloan? I wish I could afford it, I only use the Americana paint. But one day I’ll give it a try. Your stool looks great Debra. What did you find were the major differences between y our version and the pricey stuff? What is it that makes you want to buy it?

It was fun trying out Annie Sloan paint since the seems to be the benchmark of chalk paint. The only real difference I thought is if I don’t keep mixing my homemade chalk paint the Plaster of Paris hardens. But as you say it is expensive. I will continue to make my own with a splurge every so often.

Thank you, it was kind of fun to just start painting without measuring and mixing.

Welcome Friends!

Hi I’m Debra and I think I’ve finally figured out what I want to do when I grow up! This is quite an accomplishment since I’m not a teenager! From the time I was a little girl, I drew, painted, sewed and built furniture for my precious dolls, and I had great plans to be a commercial artist. I could get totally lost in the magic of creating. I followed my dream and when I was a teenager, I moved to the west coast of Florida and attended Ringling School of Art…but then…as often happens, life had different plans for me. Can you relate to life having other plans or getting in the way?
