When you give a gift do you also want to wrap it in something special? And let’s face it, gift bags making wrapping a present so much easier. Have you ever made one? Would you like to know how to sew a gift bag for a special gift?
I decided to make a gift bag to fit a bottle of wine. When you sew the bag you can use a remnant or a piece of upholstery material. If it is pricey not to worry since you won’t need much. Or do as I did and use a fabric sample. Did I mention I still have so many samples? Some other projects I have done using fabric samples are the fabric pumpkins and coasters.
This is an easy sewing project. For the bottle of wine, I cut the sample in half, using the rotary cutter. The measurements are about 6 x 16, give or take. It depends on the sample and of course what you are making the gift bag for.
I ended up sewing a ¼” seam because the sample I used made it a little snug. Sew along the sides and bottom, right sides together. Clip the corners so they aren’t bulky. I used a wine bottle to figure out how far I wanted to sew along the edges. Leave enough fabric to fold over for a nice seam.
The next step is to hem the rest of the side seam so that it is a finished edge. After that fold over the top so it goes a little farther than the end of the seam.
If you have a sewing machine with decorative stitches select one. This adds a pretty touch to the hem area.
We are almost done. Take a coordinating ribbon and cut 2 pieces, allow for enough length to tie a bow on either side.
How to sew a gift bag for a special gift is so easy to do. And won’t the recipient feel special knowing it was made just for them?

Very pretty fabric Debra. And it’s such a pretty way to give a gift.
Thanks so much.
Well, If I received such a handmade gift, I would feel special! That’s nicely sewn and makes a bottle of wine, or seltzer, or Sparkling Grape Juice a really nice gift! When you get our age, food or drink is always a welcome gift.
I agree, Florence. We really don’t need much at this point. Thanks.
Great idea! This I will be using! Thanks.
Thank you so much, Laura.
I have tons of fabric, so I think I need to start making some gift bags 🙂 Also love the decorative stitching you used.
Thanks so much, Erlene. It is a great way to use up those scrap pieces of material.
Love it and with Father’s day coming up I think I’m going to make one for my Dad’s pressie. The wine we bought for him will look so much better in a handmade gift bag
Thanks, Michelle. I am so glad you like it.
