Now I have been trying to clean out my garage so I haven’t been shopping. But every so often a girl has to shop, right? My Pickin’ Sister, Sue and I decided to pay a final visit to one of our favorite salvage shops. The owner retired and couldn’t find a buyer (insert a very sad face). So we had a great day shopping and stopped at a few places. I got this basket at Good Will and questioned myself for buying it. But I had a vision. Discover how to paint a basket for a farmhouse look.
It is a very simple update so if you see an orange basket don’t run away from it. As a matter of fact, another friend gave me an orange basket that definitely needs a paint job so don’t be surprised if you see another basket makeover. Another basket I updated changed from a brown basket to a lighter look.
Of course, most things bought at a thrift store may need to be repaired and cleaned. This basket did need a few spots fixed. It is easily taken care of by gluing with wood glue.
For the first coat of paint, I used a very light gray mixed with Poppies’ Furniture Paint Powder. This product is great because it mixes with any latex paint to create a chalk-like finish. It was mixed to be a wash of color.
The next coat of paint, because you know I love to layer colors is a white paint mixed with Poppies’. Once again the paint was mixed as a wash. I painted the basket in a sloppy manner so the gray shows through. Continue to paint the layers so the orange is covered.
When you like how the basket looks spray it with a protective spray.
You can stop here which is perfectly fine or make a liner for the basket. I made reversible liners. And it is so easy. Use a printed piece of burlap and a piece of drop cloth, cut it in a circle. You can use a plate as a guide to draw the circle on a piece of tracing paper. Cut it out and put in the basket to make sure it fits. Adjust as needed.
Pin the 2 pieces of material together, wrong sides facing each other. Decide on a decorative stitch on the sewing machine and sew around the circle. If you don’t like to sew, you can use pinking scissors or scissors that cut a decorative edge. If you want it to be reversible, a fusible tape will work.
How to paint a basket for a farmhouse look is an easy way to update an orange basket. And it is so much fun to style it. Needless to say, I think I am going to hold on to this for a while.
