Have you ever thought of a great idea only to forget what it is? That is what happened for this month’s Thrifty Chicks project. The item we are challenged to repurpose is spools. So I still can’t think of the idea and if I do I will let you know. In the meantime I decided how to make a wooden beaded garland using spools is a good project as well.
The Thrifty Chicks meet once a month to show our ideas for a repurposed item or theme. It is always so much fun. I love being part of this talented group of bloggers.
What made me think of the garland is I remembered I had bought a package of wooden spools for another project. Well, I obviously used something else. So the little spools were the starting point.
After a trip to Michaels for beads, I was ready to get crafting. The beads come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. Most importantly they blend in with the spools. I decided to make the garland with tassels on both sides.
And that is how I started, using the jute twine. I wrapped the twine around my hand around 15 times.
Then I wrapped the twine around the tassel by tying it first. After that wrap it around the tassel and dab on a bit of hot glue.
I was concerned the twine would be too thick to go through the beads and spools so I switched to the cotton string. Take the string and tie it around the top of the tassel. If it is difficult to thread the string through the beads rub a little wax over the tip of the string.
Lay out the beads in a design you like. And cut off more than enough string so you don’t run out. Then start beading. I started with the spool since it is supposed to be the star of the project. The garland is about 37 inches. When I reached the end I tied the other tassel.
I stopped when I ran out of the larger beads. It is the perfect size for the little table in the bedroom. I put the sweater pumpkins on a little wooden plate on the table.
I like how it looks and plan on changing the vignette with the seasons. The garland is just another item to use for that.
Whatever my other idea is it doesn’t bother me that much that I can’t remember what it is.
How to make a wooden beaded garland using spools is a project I wanted to try at some point. I know I will be creating a lot of vignettes using it. Be sure to see what the other Thrifty Chicks created using spools. You are sure to get some great ideas.
