Today I’ll show you how to make a chair from almost anything. I love to create furniture from bits and pieces of broken furniture. It is almost like a marriage of sorts. For this project, I took a spinning wheel and a broken vanity chair to create a spinning chair!
I love doing projects like this. And it is the day the Thrifty Chicks get together. This month’s theme is “something we love”. It fits the topic perfectly
A little background on the chair. Every year a group of friends begins the holiday season with a tour of Holiday Homes. One year we saw a chair that was made from a spinning wheel. Missy and I saw it years ago but we never forgot it.
Fast forward to the present. Missy has a spinning wheel that was a family heirloom. I mentioned to Missy I would build a chair using the spinning wheel. She was thrilled. The friend who gave me all of her stuff when she gave up her booth included a vanity chair. It is the perfect complement to the spinning wheel.
Taking the spinning wheel apart, I used the actual wheel and a few other pieces. Now at first, I had one way I was going to build it so I added a piece on the back to hide the holes and give the wheel stability.
Then I decided to do it a different way so I really didn’t need to add the piece.
My neighbor stopped by and he sawed the piece that holds the spinning wheel on the base off. Then I filed it smooth. The piece on the other side was left as is.
I predrilled holes and screwed the spinning wheel to the chair. To dress up the chair, pieces were added to the front of the chair back.
Using DIY chalk paint in a cream I got to work painting it. If I had known how I was going to do it I would have painted the pieces first. After painting the chair I waxed and buffed it out.
For the seat, I remove everything which included two pieces of fabric that I tossed. Starting fresh I reupholstered it with new foam, batting and drop cloth. You can check out this post to see how I do it.
It was a pleasure to create this chair. I love how to make a chair from almost anything. Or a table such as one from a chair. Or the unique table made from a drawer. It can be challenging but oh so creative. Now let’s see what the other Thrifty Chicks love to do.
