I had a leftover candleholder from a set someone gave me. The first one was used for a Halloween decoration. The other one sat, just waiting. The bathtub ledge needed a little something to dress it up and it hit me. Why not look for two more candleholders. How to give mismatched candleholders a farmhouse look would fit the look I was going for in the bathroom.
The candleholders were washed with Dawn. Since I just bought two they weren’t bad. But the one that I had for so long was dusty…full of sawdust.
The tallest candleholder is wood. There was a raised design on it so I sanded it for a smooth look. The other two were ceramic. Not taking any chances I used primer on all 3 candlesticks. I did several coats to make sure there would be no hint of what they use to look like.
I wanted these to look like they have been lovingly cared for. In my mind, they had layers of paint and a timeworn look.
It is enjoyable to mix my own colors. For this project, I took the leftover gray paint from the dresser and mixed it with white. Of course, I added Poppies’ Furniture Paint Powder for the chalk-like finish.
Once the paint dried I used Vaseline here and there to allow the gray to show through. I didn’t want to sand the ceramic candlesticks to much.
The next coat of paint is an ivory shade. I painted the candleholders two more times for complete coverage. Now I did lightly sand them to smooth it out. I take a piece of sandpaper and wrap it around a sanding sponge.
The candleholders were waxed with a clear wax. Then the dark wax to take the newness away. It gives a little charm to the corner in the bathtub. How to give mismatched candleholders a farmhouse look is easy and looks good. Now can I let you in on a little secret? I have a separate shower so the kitty litter boxes are in the tub. So now the kitties have a stylish spot.
