I know what you must be thinking, not another mirror! It is from my friend’s stash that she gave me and I am afraid as I shuffle things around in the garage it will get broken. It is a plain mirror. KT started painting it in coral and was going to add stripes. I decided to go in a different direction, so this is how to add a little pizzazz to a plain mirror. Some of my favorite mirror makeovers are the one with the beachy look and the wicker one.
Actually, the coral was my inspiration on how I decided to paint it. Dixie Belle has a line of products that are perfect for the effect I was thinking about.
First off I sanded the frame around the mirror. I wondered how it was hung and found out after I sanded it. There were 4 holes, one on each side. I think KT may have patched them but I added a little bit more wood filler.
After the prep work, I brushed on the copper glaze base coat. Now when I work on a project I generally have a few things going on at the same time. I do that so each piece will be thoroughly dry.
Once the base coat dried I painted on the Midnight or what is really black. Again I let it dry but not before I did a wet distress on it. That means I wipe back the paint with a damp cloth after the paint set up. I repeated the process.
Then after those layers were fully cured I dry brushed the copper metallic top coat glaze on the mirror frame.
I wasn’t done yet. I knew it was missing something. So I decided to do a splatter effect by dipping a toothbrush in the Midnight paint and flick it on the frame. If I didn’t like the look I dabbed it with a damp paper towel or wiped it and flicked the paint on again.
As a final step, I added a saw tooth hanger to the back and the mirror frame was lightly waxed.
I know it seems like a lot of steps but it is well worth the look. The mirror looks so upscale using this method. And how to add a little pizzazz to a plain mirror does the job.
By the way I have an exciting giveaway coming on Monday. KariAnne Wood who has the wonderful blog, Thistlewood Farms wrote a book, So Close to Amazing.
