I have been wanting to do a light white wash on a piece of furniture. I didn’t want to strip or sand down a piece to get the look. I have to admit I have been feeling lazy. I did a quick hit and run at Good Will the other day. I saw this mirror and thought to myself this is the perfect piece to show you how to achieve a natural finish with white wash. You see it was already in its natural state.
This was a quick project just because I didn’t need to sand it down. But if you do find a piece and feel the look will work for you then you may need to sand it or even strip it. Or a combination of the two. I am no stranger to doing it. You can read how I removed over 60 years of paint on the farmhouse vanity.
And I know you are probably thinking what another mirror? But they do make a great accessory for your home. They are a quick update plus thrift stores have so many different styles. And how could I pass it up with its handy shelf?
I do have a confession to make. I was in my garage looking for something for an upcoming project and found 2 mirrors hidden away. That means 4 more mirror projects coming up.
Because I didn’t need to remove the finish that was an easy project for me. I only had to wipe the mirror with vinegar and water. Let it dry.
After the mirror was dry I taped the mirror off. Then I brushed on the white wash stain. It stayed on for only about a minute and then I wiped it off with a soft lint free cloth.
The back was missing the picture hanging wire but that was an easy fix. Since I try to make sure I have the supplies on hand I was able to take care of it.
Let the stain dry. Once it was fully dry I waxed it for protection. It was a simple little update. And it will blend with the coastal style that is popular in my area or the farmhouse look. Or even the eclectic decorating that so many of us like. It isn’t an in your face transformation but it does look more up to date.
