A little golden touch to inspire. I was at Hobby Lobby browsing around and saw these golden knobs. I have a confession to make, I love Hobby Lobby knobs (boy try saying that three times fast). Many of my projects are inspired by the knob selections. The minute I saw the glint of the gold knobs I knew I had to buy them. I bought two golden knobs. Then I decided they would work perfectly on a three drawer chest I needed to paint. Yes I broke my promise to myself and instead of painting the knobs that came with the chest I went back and got another golden knob.
The first coat of my DIY chalk paint is a very, very light blue. It is a Sherwin Williams color called “Crystal Clear”.This is my DIY Chalk Paint recipe. I also painted the inside of the drawers and did keep them in the Crystal Clear blue. After painting another coat, I used spackle and a stencil where the golden knobs go to add a little pizazz to the piece. I just applied the spackle over the stencil to give the drawer a raised detail. I let it set up a little and carefully removed the stencil. This technique added some interest to a very plain chest.
Then I let everything sit for a few days. One reason is because I wanted to make sure the spackle had plenty of time to harden. And life got in the way of working on projects.
Once I got back to work, I mixed up a DIY white chalk paint. I have no idea of the name as the paint dripped all over the label. I did a light coat and allowed the Crystal Clear blue to appear here and there. It wasn’t a wash but the mixture was thin enough so that it didn’t go on thickly.
Once the DIY chalk paint was dry I sanded the piece with fine sand paper, probably around a 1200 grit. I didn’t distress it. It was sanded so the finish is smooth to the touch. Then a clear wax all over including the inside of the drawers. After the chest was waxed and buffed I used gold Rub n Buff to highlight the raised area. The golden knobs were added and another project headed to Shoppe No. 5.
